A forward looking, strategically important area like Essex needs excellent public services to support its communities. Essex Probation is an essential part of the network of services that support the economic and social prominence of Essex.

Working alongside our colleagues in other services, especially the Court Service, the Police and local authorities, we are building an organisation that will carry out the work of safeguarding our communities effectively and efficiently.

We are not just concerned with stopping offending behaviour. We are dedicated to providing rehabilitation that assists offenders in turning their lives around and becoming contributing members of society.

We know that the work of Probation is not well understood. We have put together this document to assist in explaining what we do, why we do it and how we service Essex.

Our influence extends right across the Criminal Justice System. Before court appearances and sentencing, through to completion of community sentences, or imprisonment and post-release, Essex Probation staff will be there.

To achieve our success, we need tomake wide and imaginative provision for a great diversity of offenders. We value the work of our contracted and strategic partners which enhances and expands on what works best in cutting crime.

While we work with offenders to make sure they understand the impact of their crime on victims, we also provide information directly to victims of serious crime. We have a responsibility to tell them, or their families, about offenders sentenced to custody of one year and over for sexual or other violent offences and offenders with serious mental health issues.
